{"id":142,"date":"2015-05-21T06:08:53","date_gmt":"2015-05-21T10:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/?p=142"},"modified":"2022-07-08T14:49:09","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T18:49:09","slug":"how-to-prevent-bite-wounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/how-to-prevent-bite-wounds\/","title":{"rendered":"How to prevent bite wounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you heard about the poor guy who was\u00a0awarded $100 million yesterday\u00a0after\u00a0losing most of his left arm, most of his left leg, and his left ear, in an attack by a pack of dogs outside a Detroit home?<\/p>\n<p>This week is &#8220;National Dog Bite Prevention Week.&#8221; It&#8217;s a time to learn how <em>you<\/em> can avoid\u00a0getting bitten by a dog.<\/p>\n<p>First, I also would like to share some tips about how to prevent <em>your pet<\/em>\u00a0from\u00a0getting bitten.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Avoiding dog bites in pets:<\/h3>\n<p>The information below is based on experience with many pets I&#8217;ve had to do surgery on after they&#8217;ve been attacked by another animal, and from tips provided by\u00a0Susan Bulanda, an ethologist specializing in dog and cat behavior.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be aware that an Invisible Fence\u00ae is designed to prevent your dog from leaving your yard.\u00a0 But it certainly does not prevent other dogs and wild animals from coming onto your property.<\/li>\n<li>Spaying and neutering may decrease aggressive behavior\u2026 at least in your dog.<\/li>\n<li>Spaying and neutering decreases roaming, which certainly can lead to fights.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t leave your dog unattended outside.\u00a0 Surely, it is much easier to open the door and let them do whatever they feel like.\u00a0 Most of the time, nothing bad will happen.\u00a0 But what if it does?\u00a0 What if an aggressive dog shows up on your property and attacks your dog?<\/li>\n<li>Certainly, don&#8217;t leave your dog tied up outside.\u00a0 Should your dog get attacked, there is absolutely no way to escape or defend him\/herself if (s)he is tied up.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your dog on a leash during walks, but be aware of your surroundings and realize that a dog can attack yours.<\/li>\n<li>Do not approach an unfamiliar dog.<\/li>\n<li>Vaccinate your dog for rabies (among other contagious diseases).\u00a0 It may be required by law where you live anyway.<\/li>\n<li>Dog fights also occur under the same roof, for example when food is involved.\u00a0 If this is a recurring problem, you may need to feed your dogs in separate rooms.\u00a0 A canine behavior consultant can help solve or at least decrease this problem.<\/li>\n<li>If your dog is aggressive toward other pets, then it is your responsibility to consult with a behaviorist or a trainer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>A few facts about\u00a0dog bites in people:<\/h4>\n<p>According to the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each year, more than 4.5 million people in the U.S. are bitten by dogs.<\/li>\n<li>Almost 1 in 5 people bitten by dogs require medical attention.<\/li>\n<li>Children are, by far, the most common victims of dog bites and are far more likely to be severely injured.<\/li>\n<li>Most dog bites affecting young children occur during everyday activities and while interacting with familiar dogs.<\/li>\n<li>Senior citizens are the second most common dog bite victims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Avoiding dog bites in people:<\/h4>\n<p>The AVMA provides a list of when you should avoid petting a dog:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the dog is not with its owner.<\/li>\n<li>If the dog is with its owner but the owner does not give permission to pet the dog.<\/li>\n<li>If the dog is on the other side of a fence, don\u2019t reach through or over a fence to pet the dog.<\/li>\n<li>If a dog is sleeping or eating.<\/li>\n<li>If a dog is sick or injured.<\/li>\n<li>If a dog is resting with her puppies or seems very protective of her puppies and anxious about your presence.<\/li>\n<li>If a dog is playing with a toy.<\/li>\n<li>If the dog is a service dog. Service dogs are working animals and shouldn\u2019t be distracted while they are doing their jobs.<\/li>\n<li>If the dog is growling or barking.<\/li>\n<li>If the dog appears to be hiding or seeking time alone in its special place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bottom line:<\/strong> bite wounds are very common and can lead to very severe problems, for you or your pet. He is a board-certified surgeon and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, a coveted professional achievement Dr. Zeltzman is also a certified surgeon for the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), having performed thousands of these procedures in dogs from less than 30 pounds to more than 250 pounds! The results of his work have been very impressive. Dr. Zeltzman\u2019s interests include all aspects of soft tissue, orthopedic, cancer, reconstructive, and neuro surgery, as well as physical therapy and emergency cases. He also has a strong interest in the prevention and treatment of obesity. His newest endeavor is stem cell therapy for arthritis, kidney disease, liver disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as well as tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA). Dr. Zeltzman knew he wanted to be a veterinarian since the age of 5 when his favorite TV shows were Flipper, Daktari, and Lassie. \u201cBecoming a veterinary surgeon has been a dream come true, and I am as passionate about my profession as I was when I first started,\u201d he says. In practice, Dr. Zeltzman\u2019s goal is to offer the best surgical care, the safest anesthesia, and the utmost pain management to all of his patients. Actively involved in teaching, lecturing, and publishing, both locally and internationally, Dr. Zeltzman has published two books: Cocker Spaniels: A Practical Guide for People Owned by a Cocker and Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound, a book on weight loss for both dogs and people, co-written with Rebecca Johnson. He also writes a monthly award-winning newsletter for true dog and cat lovers. It is read in all 50 States, as well as more than 40 foreign countries. This newsletter has evolved into his blog. As a Certified Veterinary Journalist (CVJ), blogger, columnist, and award-winning author, his goal is to write meaningful articles, newsletters, and books that will make a difference in the lives of pets and their owners. He has published numerous articles in national and international veterinary journals, and is currently working on several book projects. He is also a prolific speaker. He completed a one-year internship at the University of Georgia, followed by a three-year surgery residency at Surgical Referral Service in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. He then worked as a surgeon for four years at a surgical practice in Cincinnati, Ohio, and an additional four years at a surgical practice in Whitehall, Pennsylvania. He is a board-certified surgeon and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, a coveted professional achievement Dr. Zeltzman is also a certified surgeon for the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), having performed thousands of these procedures in dogs from less than 30 pounds to more than 250 pounds! The results of his work have been very impressive. Dr. Zeltzman\u2019s interests include all aspects of soft tissue, orthopedic, cancer, reconstructive, and neuro surgery, as well as physical therapy and emergency cases. He also has a strong interest in the prevention and treatment of obesity. His newest endeavor is stem cell therapy for arthritis, kidney disease, liver disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as well as tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA). Dr. Zeltzman knew he wanted to be a veterinarian since the age of 5 when his favorite TV shows were Flipper, Daktari, and Lassie. \u201cBecoming a veterinary surgeon has been a dream come true, and I am as passionate about my profession as I was when I first started,\u201d he says.
