Since I am a surgeon, this statement obviously hurts my feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Surgeons have feelings too, you know!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">I typically ask questions to try to understand where my client is coming from. The story usually involves fear of the unknown, or the loss of an older or sick pet under anesthesia years and years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Then I help the client realize that their fear is not really about surgery, but about the anesthesia. Even though surgeons hate that quote, in our profession we say that \u201cthere are routine surgeries, but there is no routine anesthesia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">So we take anesthesia extremely seriously. And you should make sure that the veterinary team about to treat your pet takes it seriously as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1460 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Old-dog.jpg\" alt=\"An older dog sitting in the snow\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Old-dog.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Old-dog-1100x733.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Old-dog-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">What does that mean? It means doing blood work to ensure your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia. If there are abnormalities, it gives us a chance to correct them. If the bloodwork is normal, then this is wonderful news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">I feel strongly that every pet should have a trained, dedicated nurse monitoring them throughout anesthesia. This allows the doctor to focus on your pet and the surgery, while the nurse focuses on the anesthesia. This is similar to what happen in human medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Years ago, a huge scientific study (almost 100,000 dogs and 80,000 cats) found out that the death rate around anesthesia time is 0.17% in dogs and 0.24% in cats. I said \u201caround anesthesia time\u201d and not \u201cunder anesthesia\u201d because the researchers looked into pets who died up to 48 hours after the end of anesthesia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Even better: these numbers are actually the <\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><i>average<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\"> death rate. It\u2019s the average between perfectly healthy patients, extremely sick patients and everything in between. And the study included puppies and kittens, adults as well as seniors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1459 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Old-cat.jpg\" alt=\"A cat under a blanket\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Old-cat.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Old-cat-1100x728.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Old-cat-768x508.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">So if you have a healthy pet, you\u2019d think that going under anesthesia for a planned (ie non-emergency) surgery, the risk of death under anesthesia is even lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Sure enough: in healthy dogs, the death rate around anesthesia time is 0.05%. In healthy cats, it\u2019s 0.1%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Numbers are a bit worse for sick patients. In sick dogs, the death rate around anesthesia time is 1.3%. In sick cats, it\u2019s 1.4%<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">These numbers are incredibly small, which means that anesthesia is incredibly safe in our cats and dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">That said, the risk is sadly never zero. And that is why we take it so seriously \u2013 and you should too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Now\u2026 there is something else you should know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Anesthesia is not the riskiest thing for your pet. The biggest risk, believe it or not, is the period right <\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><i>after<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\"> anesthesia, when they wake up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><span style=\"color: #222222;\">This is not the time to be complacent and walk away from a patient. This is the time to continue to monitor and make sure the pet is comfortable and warm and breathing well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Monitoring after anesthesia should be taken very seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1458 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Puppy-cute.jpg\" alt=\"A puppy held in arms\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Puppy-cute.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Puppy-cute-1100x833.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Puppy-cute-768x582.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">So how do you ensure that your veterinary team takes your pet\u2019s anesthesia seriously? As your pet\u2019s best advocate, you have the right to ask questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Here are 10 suggestions to discuss openly with your vet:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. Will someone monitor my pet during anesthesia?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. How qualified is this person?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. Will you monitor my pet after surgery?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. Will you monitor my pet\u2019s blood pressure?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. Will you monitor my pet\u2019s CO2 level?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. How will you ensure my pet remains warm during and after surgery?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. What kind of pain medications will my pet receive?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. Will my pet have an IV catheter and receive IV fluids?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">. Does my pet have specific risks under anesthesia?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">.
