Every time he sat somewhere, he would leave a bloody spot. He was otherwise healthy. He also developed a larger mass behind the other one. The smaller mass became ulcerated (meaning it broke open) and started to bleed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1516 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tucker-masses-preop-2000x1500.jpg\" alt=\"Pre-surgery\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tucker-masses-preop-2000x1500.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tucker-masses-preop-1100x825.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tucker-masses-preop-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tucker\u2019s family vet took a cell sample (aka a \u201cFine Needle Aspirate\u201d) and wisely sent it to the lab. The results showed that the mass was benign, meaning there was no obvious sign of cancer!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Encouraged by the good news, Tucker\u2019s loving owner decided what few pet owners would do on a 15 year old dog: she decided to have the masses removed!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So Tucker&#8217;s family vet asked me to remove the masses. Since Tucker had a heart murmur (treated with medications), there was a concern for placing him under anesthesia. He had preop blood work and a comprehensive physical exam prior to anesthesia. Both were good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Surgery was done to remove both masses. The smaller ulcerated mass was first removed, then the larger one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Grandpa Tucker recovered smoothly from anesthesia and went home to heal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He needed to wear a plastic cone and stay very quiet during his 3 week recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A week later, the results of the biopsy came back: the small mass was a perianal adenoma (aka circum-anal adenoma, aka hepatoid tumor), which arises from the sebaceous glands around the anus. No cancer was found and the tumor had been successfully removed completely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The larger mass was a lipoma, ie a benign fatty tumor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So both masses were benign \u2013 the best news we could have received.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Three weeks after surgery, Tucker went to his family vet to have the incision rechecked. Everything looked good, so he was allowed to resume normal activity and enjoy his walks again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1515 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tucker-postop.jpg\" alt=\"Post Surgery\" width=\"1280\" height=\"956\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tucker-postop.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tucker-postop-1100x822.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tucker-postop-768x574.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As I always say, \u201cage is not a disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tucker can enjoy life without a painful, raw, bleeding mass on his behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And Tucker\u2019s dedicated owner was rewarded for her decision to help her 15 year old dog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Phil Zeltzman, DVM, DACVS, CVJ, Fear Free Certified<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tucker, a 15 year old Shih Tzu, had a concerning mass on his behind.
