The physical exam was unremarkable &#8211; except for the swollen toe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Blood work was normal, so she was a good candidate for anesthesia. X-rays showed a concerning area in one of the bones of the toe (what would be your pinky). The bone was clearly abnormal. Look at the red arrows and notice how rough the edges of the bone are compared to the bones in other toes. This can indicate a variety of concerning diseases, from a fungus to cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1523 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Reagan-X-ray.jpg\" alt=\"A swelling toe\" width=\"1258\" height=\"1510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Reagan-X-ray.jpg 1258w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Reagan-X-ray-916x1100.jpg 916w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Reagan-X-ray-768x922.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1258px) 100vw, 1258px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Based on the concern that this was most likely bone cancer, we recommended removing the toe. Sadly, there was no other treatment option. Please be warned, the pictures below are GRAPHIC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The surgery was straight forward. The entire toe was removed and sent out to the lab to identify the abnormality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1521 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Removed-toe-2000x1500.jpg\" alt=\"The removed toe\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Removed-toe-2000x1500.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Removed-toe-1100x825.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Removed-toe-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Postop, the foot looks pretty cosmetic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1520 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Reagan-foot-postop-2000x1500.jpg\" alt=\"Post-operative\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Reagan-foot-postop-2000x1500.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Reagan-foot-postop-1100x825.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Reagan-foot-postop-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reagan recovered smoothly from anesthesia. She was given pain medications and antibiotics. She went home with an Elizabethan collar to ensure that she did not cause trauma to the surgery site or cause an infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">About a week postop, the biopsy results came back. Was bone cancer confirmed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Amazingly, the report explained that it was all benign. The bone reaction was \u201creactive and inflammatory\u201d. The changes may have been due to an old fracture of the bone \u2013 even though Reagan\u2019s owner never noticed any limping\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although we don\u2019t have a definite explanation for the swelling and the changes in the bone, the good news is that Reagan made a full recovery and went back to her normal, happy life with a great outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Phil Zeltzman, DVM, DACVS, CVJ, Fear Free <\/em>Certified<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reagan, a 6 year old Doberman, was seen for swelling in one of her left front toes.
