The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recently published their guidelines on the age to spay or neuter cats. The official title of the document is \u201cVeterinary Task Force on Feline Sterilization Recommendations for Age of Spay and Neuter Surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
\nThis is a highly controversial and debated\ntopic (even more so in dogs). There are many opinions out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nMost people have an opinion on the subject,\noften based on dogma or personal beliefs more than science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThe AVMA put together a group of various\nveterinarians (from corporations, private practice, vet schools and\nassociations).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThey also included non-veterinarians: Steve\nDale (behaviorist and journalist), a lady from the Philanthropy for\nAnimal Advocates and the Chair of the Cat Fanciers\u2019 Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nSo I think it\u2019s fair to say that there were\nmany cat lovers and cat advocates on the team. So what are their\nconclusions? I quote (I only added a few definitions between\nparentheses):<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cCurrent recommendations for the age to\nsterilize (spay\/neuter) cats are arbitrary and inconsistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nAdoption of evidence-based guidelines is\nexpected to limit confusion among cat owners, reduce the risk of\nunwanted litters, and maximize health and welfare benefits. (\u2026) \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThe following key findings and proposals\nemerged from a review of the currently available scientific\nliterature and group discussion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n1. Recommendations for the optimal age to\nsterilize cats may differ from the age to sterilize dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n2. Current scientific evidence documents\nbenefits of spaying kittens before the first estrous cycle, including\nthe following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n. Decreased risk for mammary carcinoma (aka\nbreast cancer).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n. Elimination of reproductive emergencies such\nas pyometra (aka an infected uterus) and dystocia (aka difficulty\ngiving birth).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n. Avoidance of unintended pregnancies that may\noccur as early as 4 months of age<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n. Potential decrease in behavioral problems\nlinked with cat relinquishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n3. Current evidence does not support an\nincreased risk for cats of complications or long-term adverse health\neffects with pediatric (6-14 weeks) or juvenile sterilization (>16\nweeks).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n4. More controlled prospective research\nspecifically examining different ages in sterilization in cats is\nneeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nAs new information becomes available, the\nrecommended age for sterilization of cats should be revisited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n5. There is potential to increase the number of\nsterilized cats and reduce the unplanned\/unwanted litters of kittens\nif veterinarians routinely schedule this surgery for client-owned\ncats at the end of the kitten vaccination series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nGiven the known benefits of sterilization and\nthe lack of evidence for harm related to age at which the procedure\nis performed, the Veterinary Taskforce on Feline Sterilization calls\nfor veterinary practitioners and professional associations to\nrecommend sterilization of cats by 5 months of age<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThis provides veterinary practitioners with a\nconsistent message that may increase veterinary visits and\nspay\/neuter compliance while reducing the risk of pet relinquishment\nand unwanted offspring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nBottom line: spay or neuter your kittens\nby 5 months of age.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
