Constipation<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many pets will not have a bowel movement for the first few days after anesthesia and surgery. There are several reasons for that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your pet has been fasted prior to surgery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your pet may not have eaten well during the hospital stay or the first few days at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anesthesia drugs and pain medications may slow down your pet\u2019s transit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your pet does not have a bowel movement&nbsp;within 4-5 days&nbsp;after returning home, your vet or surgeon will often suggest a stool softener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please always follow a vet\u2019s advice, because some \u201chuman\u201d stool softeners are toxic to pets, mostly in cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also note that some pets will occasionally have the opposite reaction and will have diarrhea, possibly due to stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Dog.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Dog.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Dog-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2. Lethargy, nausea, poor appetite<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these can happen after anesthesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your pet simply doesn\u2019t feel well after anesthesia and\/or surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drugs do get out of the body very quickly (some within minutes, most within hours).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, it may take a few days to get over anesthesia, just like in a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cat.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cat.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cat-768x536.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">3. Dysphoria<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can certainly happen in cats, but it\u2019s more obvious in dogs who wake up from surgery.<br>They are often discombobulated.<br>They have no idea what happened to them.<br>They may not know who you are and where they are.<br>They\u2019re spacey or groggy or loopy, while the full effects of anesthesia wear off.<br>They pace. They can\u2019t sit still. They can\u2019t rest.<br>They can\u2019t \u201cseem to get comfortable.\u201d<br>They won\u2019t lie down for hours at a stretch.<br>If you\u2019ve ever had anesthesia, you likely felt the same way.<br>You may also have seen videos of kids or adults waking up from anesthesia, after dentistry or surgery, and they say the weirdest or funniest things \u2013 which they don\u2019t even remember later.<br>Since dogs don\u2019t understand what\u2019s happening, it causes anxiety.<br>And they don\u2019t know how to express that, except through whining.<br>While it\u2019s stressful to any pet lover, the good news is that it should go away after a good night&#8217;s sleep \u2013 rarely longer than that.<br>If you doubt it, let me give you a classic example. If we only sedate a dog (not even full anesthesia) to take X-rays or change a bandage or trim their nails, and reverse the drugs, they may experience dysphoria.<br>We haven\u2019t done anything painful, yet they cry like they\u2019re in severe pain.<br>Why is that? Well, it\u2019s exactly for the reasons explained above. It\u2019s not pain. It\u2019s dysphoria.
