Blood work<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We always recommend pre-anesthetic blood work to make anesthesia and surgery as safe as possible. Seemingly healthy pets on the outside can have serious problems on the inside. They could cause complications during anesthesia and surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pre-anesthetic blood work will confirm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Liver and kidney health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red and white blood cell count<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enough platelets for proper clotting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enough protein to ensure healing and clotting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Balanced electrolytes, which can affect the stability of the heart under anesthesia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovery of a small imbalance will allow us to adjust drugs or IV fluids before, during, and after your pet\u2019s anesthesia and surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless it\u2019s an emergency and we don\u2019t have the luxury of time, detection of a serious problem may lead us to postpone surgery until the pet\u2019s condition is stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can happen with high liver values, which could justify an ultrasound to make sure we\u2019re not missing something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2. Medications<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will let you know which medications to continue or stop before anesthesia. And we\u2019ll tell you when to resume them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other drugs are given to reduce stress and the risk of vomiting around anesthesia time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An added benefit is that it will allow us to give less anesthesia to your pet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">3. Rest<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anesthesia and surgery can take a toll on the body, so let your pet chill the day before surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s just like a human: provide plenty of rest the day before surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plan on a relaxed day, full of TLC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-ways-bed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-ways-bed.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-ways-bed-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">4. Instructions<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the instructions you are given verbally and in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Failing to do that could potentially prevent your pet from having safe anesthesia and surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following them will increase the chances of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also make sure you fully understand postop instructions, i.e. what you will need to do as far as confinement, feeding, medications, supplements, activity, physical therapy, wound care, leash walks, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">5. Preparation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare your home for your pet\u2019s return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will explain in great detail how to confine your pet, which type of flooring is ideal, which toys are allowed, how to feed your pet etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the type of surgery, we may also recommend:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>getting a harness for your dog<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>changing the litter for your cat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>using soft food only<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, this all depends on the surgery, and we will help you get fully prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-ways-food.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-ways-food.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-ways-food-768x554.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">6.
