A 10 year old poodle cannot be treated like a 10 year old Mastiff (we are alluding to the fact that it is said that small dogs live longer than large breeds).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than a blanket, somewhat tongue-in-cheek answer (\u201cAge is not a disease\u201d), the solution to the dilemma is a bit more nuanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not so much the age, or the number of years, that matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, it\u2019s the consequences of aging that we should focus on, because it makes the patient more \u201cfrail\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Lab-112.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Lab-112.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Lab-112-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is a frail patient?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In humans, \u201cfrailty\u201d is defined as having less \u201cfuel in the tank\u201d and being \u201ceasier to be stressed out\u201d (in the medical sense).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frailty better predicts getting in trouble (or dying) under anesthesia, compared to age alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A frail patient will have a tougher time maintaining their heart rate and blood pressure, or staying warm, or breathing well, while under anesthesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their liver and kidneys may be less capable of eliminating toxins (e.g. anesthesia drugs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who is considered a senior patient?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Senior age is tough to tell in a dog, so it is considered to be the last 20% to 25% of the pet\u2019s lifespan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cats are more uniform in size compared to dogs, so they\u2019re considered senior once they turn 10.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Cat-112.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Cat-112.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.drphilzeltzman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Cat-112-768x566.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>So how do we keep<\/strong> <strong>senior patients safe?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We take multiple precautions, depending on the particular patient, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>smaller drug amount.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more padding, from the kennel to the OR and back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more heat support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more oxygen at the beginning and the end of anesthesia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conservative amounts of IV fluids to avoid overloading the heart.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>appropriate amounts of pain medications: not too little, not too much.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>overall more TLC, which might include hugs, kisses and handfeeding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How about anesthesia drugs in older patients?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The general idea is to give as little as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More specifically, we can lower the amount of drugs to put them, and keep them, under anesthesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, we sometimes will avoid using a certain type of drugs altogether, depending on the organs affected, such as heart, liver, and kidneys, based on preop exam &amp;
